Intercollegiate Sports
in America, 1900-2021
Spring 2021
[Course delivered completely online through Moodle at UMass Amherst
University of Massachusetts Amherst Department of History Professor John V. Lombardi lombardi@umass.edu
Syllabus for the fully online version of Intercollegiate Sports in America delivered through Moodle Everything you will need to participate in this course is available online.
This course is organized into thirteen weeks.
Each week has an introductory essay that presents the subject for the week.
It then offers a PDF set of slides that walks us through a visual conversation about the week's topics.
The introductory essay and the PDF set of slides substitute for attendance at an in-person class presentation.
Attendance Discussion Forum
For each week (1-13), there is an Attendance Discussion Forum where we can comment on the information in the PDF slide presentation. These slides and the Attendance Forum serve as a substitute for the in-person class, and everyone should post at least TWO specific comments and observations to the Attendance Discussion Forum.
Reading Discussion Forum
For Weeks 3 through 13, we have in addition an extensive weekly reading list of online materials. Often there are required items. The Reading Discussion Forum provides an opportunity to comment on specific items in the readings. Everyone should post at least THREE comments, each of which should refer to a specific reading. More posts are better.
Reading List
All of the readings are online, most are in PDF files. Because many items are copyrighted, we have a username/password to ensure that only class members can access these materials. The username/password will be posted on Moodle for enrolled students.
When you click on a reading, and enter the username/password, the reading will open in your browser or be saved to your Download directory, depending on your computer.
Class Sessions
Class sessions, in this online course, begin on Monday and last until the next Monday. Each Attendance Discussion Forum and Reading Discussion Forum will open at 1 AM on Monday and close at 1 AM on the first day of the next class.
Examinations, quizes, papers, and books
There are NO examinations, NO quizes, NO papers, and NO books or materials to buy.
However, everyone posts every week to the Attendance Discussion Forum and the Reading Discussion Forum on Moodle to demonstrate their engagement with the class and the materials provided.
