Spring 2021

Reading Assignments

The core information for this course begins with the weekly class presentation and slides, and beginning with Week 3, the online reader that has a set of required and additional readings for each week of the course. The reading list for each week, beginning on Week 3, in most cases has required items everyone should read, and in addition, a considerable number of other items that address a wide range of relevant topics. Each week's readings indicate the required items and sets a minimum number of additional readings from the list for that week. These readings, in addition to the online class presentation and accompanying slides, provide the material that we discuss in our Moodle forums.

Everyone will be able to demonstrate their knowledge by explicit reference to particular articles, chapters, or other sources when making comments in the Attendance forum or Reading forum discussions.

Students can read the materials listed for each section at any time, but they will do best if they read the items before and during the week of the discussion. Students demonstrate their knowledge of the readings by using and making explicit reference to the materials in their online discussions.

The reading list is constructed with any required items listed first, followed by an often lengthy sequence of other relevant items (articles, chapters, news reports, documents) mostly in chronological order with the oldest items first and the newest items last. This helps illustrate the chronological sequence of topics that have appeared in the press and in scholarly articles as well as in government and other agency materials over time.
