Spring 2020--3 credits
Instructor: John V. Lombardi Notes for Fully Online Version Through Moodle: What follows is the information provided to every student via SPIRE as well as on the Moodle class website for adjustments after the elimination of all in-person classes. This applies to Week 8 below to the end of the semester. CLASS UPDATE: Saturday March 21, 2020 Please check out Moodle as well. Good afternoon, As Spring Break comes to a close this weekend, we will begin our last few weeks of this course completely OnLine. Since everything you will need to continue to participate is already online through Moodle, this adjustment won't be too difficult, but may require some more focused engagement. First: in place of the one-hour class, we already have in Moodle for each week an Introduction that is an essay on the topic. In addition, we already have a Class Presentation in a PDF file that is also available for each week. This PDF presentation is what we would have had displayed in class on the screens. When you click on this file, it will open in your web browser or be saved to your Download file (depending on your computer and operating system). This Class Presentation is available to everyone beginning on each class day at 4 pm.Second: in place of signing in for attendance, each student has the opportunity to post to a special forum, titled Discussion Post for Attendance, focused on the week's Introduction and the Class Presentation. When you post to this Discussion Post for Attendance forum, focused on the class materials, be sure to make appropriate reference to the Class Presentation slide number or numbers that are the focus of your comment. This discussion posting will count as your attendance for that week. Third: as we did before, you will continue to post to the regular discussion forum each week, with the minimum of three posts per week (these are in addition to the post mentioned above that counts as attendance) and with the expectation of a specific reference to one of the week's readings in each post. Of course, the more of these posts associated with the readings the better, as the three posts per week is a MINIMUM as described in the syllabus in Moodle. These rather minor changes should make the final weeks of the class relatively easy to accomplish and allow us all to conclude with enthusiasm, energy, and good spirits. The only disadvantage is that we will not be able to have our Pizza event on the last class! John, InstructorRachael, TA Notes: This is a draft presentation of a course offered on Moodle at UMass Amherst. In addition to the materials here, each week has a class presentation that becomes visible within Moodle at the close of class. Also, each class session is accompanied by an online Moodle mediated discussion forum. The complete course is available on Moodle. This draft with the course information, the week introductions, and the readings are available online at http://jvlone.com/his20/his20/index.html Most readings are on an electronic reserve that requires a username/password provided to enrolled students in the class.
