Reading Assignments

Reading

The core information for this course begins with the online reader that has a set of required and additional readings for each part of the course. The readings are organized into groups that match the Sections of the course. For each major topical section, beginning on Week 3, we have required items everyone should read, and in addition we have a considerable number of other items that address a wide range of relevant topics. Students should read the required items and at least two of the other items for each week. These readings also provide the material that we discuss online.

Everyone will be able to demonstrate their knowledge by explicit reference to particular articles, chapters, or other sources when making comments in the email discussion.

On those registered for the course or given explicit permission as guests can access all the readings. Students can read the materials listed for each section at any time, but they will do best if they read them before the week of the discussion. Students demonstrate their knowledge of the readings by using and making reference to the materials in their online discussion.

Note that the the introductions and the readings appear in sections. For example, the section of readings on Governance supports the discussion and provides background for the classes that take place during weeks 3, 4, and 5. The section of readings on Finance supports theĀ  discussion and provides background for the classes that take place during weeks 6 and 7. And similarly for the other two sections on Race, Class and Gender, and Sports and Society.
